Why I do what I do: Good & Original

in Why I do what I do... Tags

This Spring (and it is Spring), we’re really getting into renovating and home improvements. But we know it’s so easy to get caught up in the culture of cheap and disposable, flatpack furniture but of course, that’s not how we do things at! We’re so happy to introduce Justin from Good and Original furniture. He creates beautiful, contemporary pieces that are lovingly handmade from sustainable birch wood and are, best of all, totally affordable!

Why I do what I do:

I love doing what I do, which is designing, creating, manufacturing and sustaining! Being a creative is just fantastic. I love furniture. I especially love the tactile nature of materials and the way people interact with objects, surrounding themselves with possessions that become a part of their homes. My belief is in creating long-lasting, high quality furniture from sustainable sources with minimal waste. Adding this to modern manufacturing technology, contemporary styling and the highest quality of hand-finished craftsmanship in the UK is the way forward.

Where I do it:

I am based in beautiful Faversham which is set in the wonderful countryside, yet close to the city of Canterbury and the north coast of Kent. It is a thriving market town which boasts a rich variety of artists and designers, complemented by not one, but two artist studios offering the opportunity to collaborate, display and sell work. I moved here from London 14 years ago. This was, and still is one of the best decisions I have ever made.

What drives me on:

Every piece of my furniture sold to a customer is one less low-quality, throwaway item headed for landfill.  I believe that people do want to buy local from UK businesses, however society has become accustomed to flat pack, low-quality, low-priced, short term purchases. The more we get the message out that local can be better quality and is a worthwhile alternative, the better it will be for everyone.

What I’m working on:

I am currently working on two new table designs for an exhibition in April and a commission for bespoke dining room table and chairs. I am also working very closely with my manufacturing guru to see if we can reduce our waste to zero!! Whilst most likely impossible, aim high! To this end,  I have been designing other products to fit into the manufacturing process, ensuring that as little is wasted from the material I use.

My Soapbox:

I feel as if I have cornered you at a party and spent the last 10 minutes earnestly telling you the virtues of buying UK based, sustainable furniture from me!!! Sorry!
I am a great believer in new things. What’s the worst that can happen? Every year I try to learn something new – sometimes successfully, sometimes not (I apologise to anyone who hears me sing!). This year I am trying to learn the harmonica. So again, I apologise to my family and neighbours.
