Until you dig a hole, you plant a tree, you water it and make it survive, you haven’t done a thing. You are just talking. Wangari Maathai 1940-2011 The Green Belt Movement.
One of the ways in which we celebrate new members joining the Blue Patch Collective or members renewing, we plant a whip tree in India through Tree-Nation, a citizen solution to climate change.
Tree-Nation gathers and coordinates reforestation efforts worldwide in a unique platform, enabling every citizen, company and planter to take action.
What’s unique is they’re able to track the actual planting projects, through technology that to unites and communicates what’s happening ‘on the ground’, showing where forest and woodland habitats are being restored by local people, putting a face and a name to the hands doing all the work.
Our Forest of Blue Patch is a new initiative, launched in April 2019. We decided to support safe habitats for Grey Slender Lorises through the planting of native trees.
Grey slender lorises are listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of India, 1972, according them the highest level of legal protection and on Appendix II of Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Besides the destruction of their habitat, lorises suffer a threat from poachers due to the misplaced belief that these animals have magical and medicinal powers, but also due to their capture for illegal pet trade.
In recent years there’s been habitat loss caused by the destruction of trees and vegetation, causing huge stress on their food, shelter and security against predators.
Trees for Slender Loris aims to plant native trees to provide habitats not only for the slender loris, but also for a wide variety of wild animals such as wild boar, panther, jackal, Indian gaur, spotted deer, elephant, monkey, Indian porcupine, many species of reptiles and birds.
Blue Patch donates a whip tree to be planted for every new member of the Collective, to support this programme.
We hope the Forest of Blue Patch resonates with principled businesses. We plan to keep planting, let’s see what target we reach by 2020!
